The Mathematics of Basic Pumping Well Hydraulics

This pdf document reviews the mathematical derivations of the groundwater flow equations applied to the various boundary and initial conditions of a pumping well.  The solutions of “boundary value problems” yields the models most commonly used for aquifer testing as well as predicting drawdowns from pumping wells.  Review of derivations leads to a greater understanding of the assumptions made in obtaining the solutions, thus a greater understanding of the limitations on the applications of models.
